Biography:

I graduated summa cum laude with Honors from Syracuse University in 1999. I received my MS in 2001 and PhD in 2006, both from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I joined the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2006. As of Jan 2009, I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at Koc University, Istanbul.

I lead the Intelligent User Interfaces Lab at Koç, and my main research goal is enabling people to interact with computers in a more natural fashion by combining techniques from machine learning, computer vision, computer graphics and human-computer interaction.  My research is funded by institutions including the European Research Council, Turkish National Science Foundation, Turkish Academy of Sciences, Turkish Ministry of Science & Technology, and corporate sponsors. Check out the IUI Lab for open positions, and more details on ongoing projects.

Open Research Positions This position has now closed.

Area: Intelligent Multimodal Interfaces

We are looking for exceptionally bright and motivated MS and PhD students to work on an international joint project that aims to build intelligent multimodal interfaces for military planning. The research draws from and contributes to machine learning, computer vision and speech recognition research with the eventual goal of creating natural and easy to use intelligent user interfaces. The objective of the project is to recognize spoken commands and interpret hand-drawn diagrams to infer military plans, hence past experience in speech recognition, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning and human-computer interfaces is a plus, but not required. The work will be carried out in collaboration with:

The work will build on the principal investigator's previous work on sketch recognition at MIT, and will be completed at Koc University. There will be opportunities for short term collaborative visits and extended summer stays at University of Cambridge and Texas A&MUniversity. The post covers the cost of tuition and includes a monthly stipend of up to 2500YTL.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis, although applicants are encouraged to contact the principala investigator and apply early to maximize their chances. Interested applicants should send a copy of their CV to  mtsezgin at ku.edu.tr
